Sultanabad wool hand-knotted rugs are made in the far NW of Iran in the Kurdish weaving areas famous for the antique Mahal and Ziegler rugs. These modern reproductions are excellent copies of those rugs, with soft hand spun wool, a comfortable loose weave, oversize motifs and muted but wonderful colours. Sultanabad rugs are still one of the most popular and easy to furnish with new rugs on the market and are available in various sizes, but they look best when large and oversize. The large floral motifs with palmettes and connecting tendrils are charmingly elegant and offer a much simpler non-Persian appearance – which is why the originals, designed by the Anglo-Swiss Manchester-based firm of Ziegler & Co. proved so popular in the West.
Please note they are completely different in look, feel and quality to the new Ziegler rugs made in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India! Because the wool is soft and the weave quite loose Persian hand-knotted Sultanabad rugs should not be used in very heavily trafficked areas but the upside is the wool cleans very well and they are easy to restore.
This example of sand and gold, with darker accent tones, is a superb rug and so easy to place in almost any room.
