The most feminine and European floor coverings, extremely elegant and wonderfully suited to formal sitting rooms and bedrooms. As they are a flatwoven tapestry weave and have no pile, they are not comfortable rugs and need a high-grade rug pad to add depth and prevent movement. Impossible to have them lie completely flat with an absence of small ripples.
Rugs made in Aubusson were formally recognised in the 17th Century and were cheaper options than the deep piled Savonnerie, both of which were the preserve of Royalty and the Nobility. Originally copies of rugs from Turkey and further afield were made but gradually they developed their own distinctive highly floral and often fussy look – flowers, garlands, heraldic symbols and rampant animals. These weavings reflected the style of the great French houses and palaces of the time such as mouldings and interiors of plush reds, golds, pink and green. The original old and antique Aubusson have a thicker, heavier yarn and are therefore less detailed but are more substantial.
There are different grades of Aubusson rugs and these are the finest weave on today’s market. Made by hand in a ‘tapestry weave’, the exact technique used by the French weavers from the 18th century and onwards. The designs and colours are completely accurate to offer you a look previously only available to the French Court and Nobility.
