20’6″ X 12’10” / 6.24 x 3.91- many other vintage rugs are available! An enormous and very lovely older Persian large room-sized rug.
Hand knotted wool Persian City/Workshop rugs from the small city of Nain on the fringes of the western desert of central Iran (Persia). Rug weaving was only established here in the 1930s when the local cloak making trade declined as the garment went out of fashion. The rugs have a machine spun wool pile on a fine cotton warp and weft (base). Many qualities are made and recently some poor offerings have been woven down to a price rather than up to a quality. They are mainly blue, red or cream with elegant floral sprays and woven without overly large central medallions, which makes them easier to furnish around. Most of the finer Nain wool rugs have white cotton highlights which accentuate the realistically curvilinear floral motifs, which are copied from those of Persian Isfahan rugs. Many of the better wool Nain hand knotted rugs lack a central medallion which makes them easy accommodate, especially when the colours are cream and gold. Other colours, such as pink or green, are highly unusual in the UK.
This enormous example is the typical Nain design and colours but taken to the finest grade. A fabulously refined and elegant rug.
PROS- Elegant, floral designs are very Persian and classy. Unfussy tri-toned colouring makes them easier to accommodate with surrounding room colours. Available in a wide range of sizes and can be good value. The better qualities have very good wool and dyes. The comfortable soft pile to walk and lie on. Look great with finer furniture and in bedrooms.
CONS- Poorer qualities are quite coarse and woolly with an indistinct pattern. The soft wool can wear quite quickly if the knot count is not high. The colours can look a tad cheap in the poorer rugs. They can also lie badly due to poor quality workmanship.
