This is perhaps the best known of the Persian weaving tribes, a subset of the Fars tribes in south-central Iran. Historically their rugs were the best of their kind in terms of wool and dyes, as well as the regularity and density of the weave. These days they are made in large numbers for outlets such as IKEA as well as internet retailers and therefore the qualities vary tremendously. I only sell the better qualities to give you the confidence of longevity and finer materials. They are still generally lovely individual rugs where the weaver uses her imagination to great effect to decorate the infilling to their own taste. The soft wool and warm dyes, as well as the pretty animals, birds, plants and flowers make finer Persian wool handmade tribal Qashqa’i rugs very desirable.
As a handmade artisan floor covering they are incredible value for money and serve other functions, such as bedspreads and thrown loosely over furniture. Try hanging on the wall with a soft floodlight- a great way to fill a large space and add sound and heat insulation! NB They are best used in light to medium wear areas as the larger knot and soft wool does not suit heavy foot traffic patterns.
This example of a handmade Persian wool tribal Qashqa’i rug has the typical option of two connected medallions, rather than one or three, with the main ground colour of warm red and lovely secondary colours adding depth and luxury to any room. I love the soft rich buttery colour of the cream areas.
