Sirjan rugs are hand-knotted by a sub-branch of the Afshar tribe of south-central Iran who live near the city of Kerman They are interesting rugs with a playful take on the infilling design which is the individual expression of the women weavers. Nature is their inspiration- look closely at the detail shot for the lovely repeating animal motif! The geometric serrated leaf design and other more angular designs are a reminder that the Afshar tribe were displaced from Azerbaijan 500 years ago. Hand-knotted wool Sirjan tribal rugs can be quite loose, floppy rugs so should be used with an underlay but this means they can be used as furniture throws, wall hangings and bedspreads too! Not recommended for heavy traffic areas so use in quiet rooms or bedrooms.
This four medallion and geometric infilling of animals is one of the most charming and has wonderfully rich deep reds and blues. Whilst this rug may be replicated by another Sirjan weaver it will never be exactly the same.
