* This rug is an example of what I offer. Please enquire about current stock to see availability”.

15’7′ x 10’2″ / . 4.73 x 3.10 – Other sizes are available. This example is an unusually large tribal rug with a  charming pictorial medallion.

The Luri tribe are from the mountains of the far west of Iran in Luristan, famous as a civilisation two millennia before Christ. Their rugs are loosely woven with a long pile of high-quality yarn. The dyes vary in quality and can be quite harsh and often include bright emerald green, shocking orange and bright pink. The wool is hand spun and taken from local flocks, which produce an excellent long stapled lanolin rich quality.

As with all Persian tribal rugs, the rugs of the Luri use symbols and motifs from nature which are naive and personal to the weaver. Care should be taken in cleaning Luri handmade wool rugs as the darker dyes easily bleed into adjoining paler colours, but this problem can arise with many Persian tribal and village rugs. The rugs can be prone to movement on the floor due to their pliable weave, but this can be resolved with the use of a good underlay.

Luri rugs are tremendous value for money for those wanting an artisan floor covering. Persian tribal handmade wool Luri rugs are excellent value and can make a room look rather bohemian when used as scatter rugs.

Traditionally made on horizontal looms, they are generally made in smaller sizes up to about 10’x8’/3.05×2.44. These ground looms do not allow for larger rugs to be woven so larger examples are rare.

This example is unusual both in its size and content, having a central medallion with a charming scene of animals and water.

Please use your rug with a suitable underlay which will protect the back of the knots and allow dirt to fall through the rug. Vacuum sparingly, once a week is sufficient, and do so on a low power and without the rotating brush, as this strips the pile. Clean professionally at least once every five years. Turn your rug every year if possible to even out footfall patterns and sun fading. Never leave your rug undisturbed under furniture in the dark. Keep a moth trap in the room if possible.
Every rug I sell is exactly as I have described on the invoice. I will have explained all the options open to you- including the bespoke rug making. The rug will be the very best rug you can buy within your budget and be the best suited to your room colours, light and usage. The way it is made, the materials, the age, the size and the all-round suitability for you and your room will be made completely transparent. Please feel free to ask for a second opinion if you are unsure.
