Quchan Persian handmade wool rugs are an interesting mixture of the angular Caucasian and the Turcoman motifs from the NE Iran/Afghan border. This town in the mountains, just north-west of the important holy city of Meshed in the Khorassan Province of Iran, has weavers of Kurdish origin from the far north-west, originally from Turkey and the southern Caucasus. Quchan wool rugs are rather lovely, having an abundance of tribal favourites such as animals, plants and flowers as well as borrowing heavily from their Turcoman and Belouch neighbours for heraldic motifs.

The appearance and quality vary a lot- from loosely woven long piled to more recent rugs of better weave with distinct designs and short wool. The longer shaggier piled rugs are wonderfully warm insulators and great to lounge upon. They are not abundantly available but are great value for your money.

Sizes of handmade wool Persian Quchan rugs are limited with most being either in runner or gallery size (woven in a 3:1 ratio) format. They can be used as a collection of scatter rugs rather than using one large room covering piece.

This example is a particularly interesting example of a handmade Persian Quchan rug with what looks like many smaller rugs combined into one. It has so much variation in Turkic heraldic motifs as well as stylised animals and flowers all rendered in warm colours.

Please use your rug with a suitable underlay which will protect the back of the knots and allow dirt to fall through the rug. Vacuum sparingly, once a week is sufficient, and do so on a low power and without the rotating brush, as this strips the pile. Clean professionally at least once every five years. Turn your rug every year if possible to even out footfall patterns and sun fading. Never leave your rug undisturbed under furniture in the dark. Keep a moth trap in the room if possible.
Every rug I sell is exactly as I have described on the invoice. I will have explained all the options open to you- including the bespoke rug making. The rug will be the very best rug you can buy within your budget and be the best suited to your room colours, light and usage. The way it is made, the materials, the age, the size and the all-round suitability for you and your room will be made completely transparent. Please feel free to ask for a second opinion if you are unsure.
