6’10” x 4’11” / 2.09 x 1.51- Other sizes are available.

Persian Gabbeh (Gabba) rugs are made by the tribal weavers of the Shiraz region of south-central Iran, mainly by the Qashqa’i but also the Luri. They are made in both lighter and heavy weights, using dyed and un-dyed wool, which has a tremendous lustrous feel and quality. They are perhaps the heaviest rugs you can buy so have the added advantage of staying still without rucking up and wrinkling. No underlay is required.

Persian wool Gabbeh rugs are chunkily hand knotted in designs ranging from completely plain to one small corner motif to repeating rows of blocks or stylised animals. THE most comfortable rug on the market and amazingly luxurious under bare feet- so a family snug or a bedroom are ideal. They can take wear in any room in the house but because of the amount of plain areas need to be watched over for spillages or animals making their mark- this is because the wool is largely untreated with chemicals and has plenty of natural lanolin which animals recognise and respond to. The superb wool and its protective fibres do clean up brilliantly so if the worst does happen all is not lost. They are also inexpensive to restore because the knots are huge and the colours easily matched.

This example has wonderful tones of desert colours – certainly the dusky reds of sunset reflected off the rock in the Sinai!

Indian copies are available at a lower price – you can find them in chain stores, IKEA and similar outlets -but are nowhere near the quality of the Iranian wool and weave.

Available from mat size up to 12’x9’/3.66×2.74. Larger sizes are occasionally seen but due to their tremendous weight are hard to source.

Please use your rug with a suitable underlay which will protect the back of the knots and allow dirt to fall through the rug. Vacuum sparingly, once a week is sufficient, and do so on a low power and without the rotating brush, as this strips the pile. Clean professionally at least once every five years. Turn your rug every year if possible to even out footfall patterns and sun fading. Never leave your rug undisturbed under furniture in the dark. Keep a moth trap in the room if possible.
Every rug I sell is exactly as I have described on the invoice. I will have explained all the options open to you- including the bespoke rug making. The rug will be the very best rug you can buy within your budget and be the best suited to your room colours, light and usage. The way it is made, the materials, the age, the size and the all-round suitability for you and your room will be made completely transparent. Please feel free to ask for a second opinion if you are unsure.
